What would a deep space vehicle use to detect incoming space debris?

If a hypothetical deep space vehicle (nautilus x, etc.) was in transit to an outer planet in the solar system and could not rely on earth based resources, how would it detect incoming debris (micrometeorites, alien probes, etc.)? Radar? Is this existing technology or something to be invented?
